Sunbed Rental Safety


The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued advice on the health risks associated with UV tanning equipment, such as sunbeds, sunlamps and tanning booths. 


Skin Type & Exposure Times

01  Bright White

Usually bright white or pale skin, blue or green eyes, red hair and many freckles. This skin type always burns outdoors, never tans. NOTE: A person who is a true Skin Type I should avoid tanning indoors and outdoors

DO NOT USE SUNBEDS

02  Light Beige

Light Beige skin, blue or green eyes; blonde or light brown hair and maybe freckles. This skin type has a strong tendency to sunburn outdoors, but sometimes tans.


4 to 9 min - Increasing over 10 sessions

03  Light Brown

Light brown skin, brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors but always tans.



4 to 10 min - Increasing over 10 sessions

04  Olive

Light brown or olive skin, dark brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors and tans readily


5to 12 min - Increasing over 10 sessions

05 Brown Skin

Brown skin, dark brown hair and eyes. This skin type rarely burns outdoors and tanseasily.


6to 12 min - Increasing over 10 sessions

06 Black

Black skin, black-brown eyes and hair. This skin type rarely sunburns outdoors.



7 to 12 min - Increasing over 10 sessions

If in doubt or pregnant speak to your doctor before using a sunbed.


Please note: All skin types should skip a day in between tanning and leave 48hrs between 1st and 2nd sessions. If there are reddish skin tones or tenderness customers are advised to wait until that goes away before tanning again and reduce the exposure time.

NB: Skin Types 4, 5 and 6: These skin types need to exercise precaution on initial exposure. Initial exposure should also be moderate. This particularly applies if living in the UK as natural skin protection factor is depleted through lack of regular exposure to sunshine.

DO NOT USE SUNBEDS IF:


  • you are under 18yrs
  • you have fair, sensitive skin
  • you have red hair
  • you have many freckles or moles
  • you have a history of skin cancer in the family or have suffered severe sunburn
  • you have a photosensitive skin condition
  • you are using medicines or creams that may increase your sensitivity to sunlight

WHEN USING A SUNBED:


  • Always wear goggles
  • Use a recommended tanning lotion
  • Wash off any cosmetics
  • Never use the sunbed for longer than the recommended period
  • Leave at least 24hrs between tanning sessions
  • Do not sunbathe in sunlight on the same day as using a tanning bed
